Howlers Coyote Café

Pittsburgh, PA

While I love my ‘Guins (though I leave the actual following of the games to my brother) they foiled us yet again with their winning, leaving many distracted with the play-offs from what was another awesome show. What can you do? I must mention here a thank you to the lovely ladies from work that came out to support in spite of this, you guys are great.

We had great fun with or without hordes of people as a dear friend of ours, Mr. Degan, was in town with his amazing new project A Bit Much, which includes bassist Matt and drummer John. Bengt showed the boys around the day before, while today they got to watch Bengt and myself glued to computers in order to finish mixes for the Best I Can Do EP shortly before the show (hope all you of on the mailing list enjoyed your giftie!). After startling Jo by being uncharacteristically late, the night got going with Round Black Ghosts playing songs with themes ranging from fear of ticks and lyme disease to how great your ideas are when you’re drunk yet they never stick around for the next morning. The energy was great, that mustache even better, and they turned out to be a nice group of guys.

A Bit Much was up next and did what they do so well— offering you a bit of everything. They were very tight and offered insights into several of their songs, giving the evening as a whole a kind of strange story-tellers vibe. The listener has to pick through fact and fiction, though, as vocalists can be such sneaky people…Anyways, Action Camp joined in on the fun at the end of their set, doing our best QOTSA with “God is in the Radio.” Bengt even got to wear John’s inventive face-mask mic.

AC rounded out the evening, playing a variation on the set from Excuses and gabbing away on the mic as well. It was fun playing Degan’s “I Keep on Setting Your House on Fire” in front of him, rather than behind his back, and having conversations with the audience between every song. Finally, as a side note, my look for the evening must have gone over very well as I was asked for an impromptu photo-op with a nervous gentleman wielding a camera phone. Never a dull evening I suppose…

love, maura
